For gifters
How is this different from a gift card?
A gift card carries a dollar amount. A Gifton gift is for a specific item — a latte, a pastry box, a class — at a specific local business. The gift is the thing, not the amount.
Does my friend have to download an app?
No. The gift is a wallet pass that goes to their Apple or Google Wallet. They tap the link you share, save it, and redeem it in person.
What if they don't use it?
Per our current policy, vouchers don't expire — we'll update this if that changes. If something genuinely goes wrong (the merchant closes, the gift can't be honored), we issue platform credit you can use on a future Gifton purchase.
What if they lose the pass?
They can recover it from the original share link, or claim it into a Gifton account that holds all the gifts they've received.
Can I get a refund?
All sales are final. If a merchant closes or can't honor the gift, we issue platform credit. We don't refund to the original card except in confirmed-fraud cases.
How do you handle sales tax?
We're a marketplace facilitator. We calculate, collect, and remit sales tax on every transaction.
Where can I send a gift right now?
We're launching in our first cities soon. Contact us and tell us where you are — we'll email you when we're nearby.
Why are you only in a few cities?
We onboard every merchant in person. That's slower than a self-serve marketplace, on purpose. We'd rather have a great latte at a real cafe than a generic experience nationwide.
How does the merchant get paid?
We charge a 15% flat commission on the item's base price. The rest, plus 100% of any tip, goes to the merchant via Stripe Connect Express. They can take weekly auto-deposits or cash out on demand.
Do you take a cut of tips?
No. Tips pass through 100% to the merchant.
For giftees
I just got a gift. What do I do?
Tap the link your friend sent you. A page will open with a button to save the gift to your Apple or Google Wallet. After that, walk into the place, show the pass at the counter, and tap "Redeem."
I don't have an Apple Wallet. What now?
Google Wallet works the same way. If you're on a desktop, save the gift to a Gifton account from the link.
Can I save it for later?
Yes. The pass stays in your wallet until you're ready.
How long is my voucher valid?
Per our current policy, vouchers don't expire — we'll update this if that changes.
Where can I redeem it?
At the merchant named on the pass. The pass shows their name and address.
What if the place is out of stock, or I want something else?
If the item is sold out, the merchant can offer something of equal value. Many shops will also let you pick something different, or put the gift toward something pricier and pay the difference — that part is up to the shop, not Gifton.
I lost the link. Help.
If you saved the pass to your wallet, it's still there. If you didn't, ask your friend to share the original link again, or email support@gifton.me with your friend's name and we'll help.
Do I need to make an account?
No. The pass works without one.
For merchants
What does Gifton cost me?
15% flat commission on the item's base price. No setup fee. No monthly fee. We handle Stripe fees out of our take.
How does redemption work at my register?
When a customer redeems a Gifton gift, your tablet pings. Your clerk types a 4-digit store PIN to confirm. The redemption shows up at your POS as a $0 sale.
What about sales tax?
We're a marketplace facilitator. We collect and remit sales tax on every Gifton sale. You don't file anything.
When do I get paid?
Gift money is held in a protected account until you've served the customer, then released to you — about a week later in practice. Weekly automatic deposit (no fee), or on-demand cash-out (Stripe charges $0.25). Both via Stripe Connect Express.
What is breakage and how does it work here?
Breakage is the value of unredeemed gifts. Gifton never takes it. Gifts never expire, so an unredeemed one stays held for you until the customer comes in — whenever that is.
Do I have to integrate with my POS?
No. We give you a one-page setup guide for Square, Clover, and Toast. The Gifton dashboard is on a tablet or phone — that's the integration.
What happens if I rebrand or change my menu?
You can update your store name and items in the dashboard. Items already on outstanding vouchers must still be honored — if the item is unavailable, you can offer a swap of equal value.
What if I want to leave?
Sixty days' notice. Outstanding vouchers must be honored during that period. After, we work with you to refund any remaining vouchers as platform credit.
Is this CARD-Act-regulated?
No. Vouchers on Gifton are for specific items, not dollar balances, which qualifies them for the CFPB's "specific goods or services" exemption.
